Economist Arminio Fraga has said he will accept the post of the country’s finance minister and has criticized the federal government’s current economic policy. The statements were made while attending a Latin Lawyer virtual event this Tuesday (30). Fraga, who is a former President of the Central Bank under the government of Fernando Henrique Cardoso, was recently appointed as a potential future member of João Doria’s Economic Team (PSDB).

At today’s event, Fraga said his return to executive power will depend on supporting the driving of the economic agenda. “It’s only good if I can do it right,” he said, stressing that the government’s ideas should be compatible with its values. “I still have a lot to contribute,” he assured, without however specifying which government he would agree to participate in. Fraga also said the country has weak leadership and bad ideas. According to him, the reforms approved so far have not been sufficient to attract new investment in Brazil.
