Mines and Energy Minister Bento Albuquerque said on Wednesday (25) that starting September 1, residential consumers across the country will be able to participate in a voluntary energy reduction program. The rules should be published in the coming days, but we already know that the government will grant reductions on the electricity bill to consumers who promote a reduction in consumption.
The expectation of the federal government is to avoid the activation of thermal power stations with a cost greater than R $ 2,000 / MWh with voluntary rationing measures. In addition to this measure aimed at small consumers, the federal government has published the rules for a program aimed at large consumers, with the aim of relieving pressure on the system during peak hours. The actions are a response to the current energy crisis, caused by the historic shortage that keeps hydropower reservoir levels low and has pushed the country towards more expensive generations to avoid shortages.
So far, compulsory measures have only been adopted with the public administration itself. In a decree signed by President Jair Bolsonaro, a 10-20% reduction in energy consumption in the public sector between the months of September and April has been determined.
