Government loan could reduce energy readjustment to 9% in 2022

The federal government’s $ 1 billion bailout to power companies in Brazil could reduce the readjustment of energy tariffs next year. The first estimates from the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) indicate that electricity bills could increase by 21.04% in 2022. This figure could drop to 9.14% if the loan of 15 billion reais to lighten the box of distributors materializes. The projection is contained in a document sent by Aneel to the Ministry of Mines and Energy made public by the State. The calculations take into account the energy production by thermoelectric power stations and the perception of the water scarcity tariff flag.

Despite the expectation of an immediate reduction in tariffs, the readjustments would be more important in the following years, given the high interest rates of this type of operation. On December 13, the government released an interim measure providing financial assistance to the electricity sector to cover expenses caused by the water crisis.
