The number of self-employed workers rose 4.2% in the second quarter of 2021, compared to the previous quarter, to 24.8 million, according to IBGE data released on Tuesday (31). According to the institute, in one year this quota has increased by 3.2 million, an increase of 14.7%. According to the agency, 52.2% of the monthly increase and 62.7% of this increase on an annual basis came from the increase in self-employed workers without CNPJs.
The increase in self-employment in the second quarter was generated mainly by activities related to accommodation and food services (9.1%), construction (5.7%), domestic services (4.0%) and agriculture, animal husbandry, forestry production, fishing and aquaculture (3.8%).
“Accommodation and food services, which includes restaurants and hotels, grew 7.7% year-on-year, the first growth after four quarters of decline. This advance does not, however, bring activity back to the level before the pandemic, but it is a movement of slight recovery, after having recorded the second largest loss of workers in 2020, behind domestic service ”, he added. said research analyst Adriana Beringuy.
