In a statement issued on Saturday (12), the Holy See said that in a “serious and unjustified decision”, Bishop Waldemar Stanislaw Sommertag, Apostolic Nuncio to Managua since 2018, was forced to leave the country immediately.

According to the publication, the Holy See received “with surprise and pain” the statement that the Nicaraguan regime had withdrawn the endorsement of its representative in the country. “Such a disposition is incomprehensible, because during his mission Bishop Sommertag worked tirelessly for the good of the Church and the people of Nicaragua, especially the most vulnerable, always seeking to foster good relations between the Apostolic See and Nicaraguan authorities,” the Holy See said. said. .

The Vatican said it was convinced that the decision “does not reflect the feelings of the deeply Christian people of Nicaragua.”

Bishop Waldemar Stanislaw Sommertag, a Polish national, was sent on a mission to Nicaragua in 2018, at a time when protests against dictator Daniel Ortega erupted across the country.
